Broadway, Morecambe

Reconstruction of the carriageway of this multi-span bridge as part of the Bridgeguard 3 project.

The project consisted of dismantling and demolition of the A589 Broadway Overbridge in Morecambe and the construction of a new bridge deck carrying Broadway (A589) over South Road and the Bare Lane – Morecambe railway.

The main works were carried out under weekend OROR possessions and involved significant traffic management to keep the traffic flowing whilst the works were carried out.

The existing bridge deck and carriageway was excavated and the existing steel girders were lifted out by crane under weekend possession. Bridge abutments were prepared to receive new fabricated steel beams which were installed over another weekend possession.

Once this was completed permanent GRP soffit formwork was installed prior to casting in-situ reinforced concrete bridge deck.

The new bridge deck was waterproofed and surfaced. Safety fencing was installed behind the kerbline to protect pedestrians and the retained bridge parapet walls.
